Project Overview

DeterCamAI cameras are being deployed at “Yukinohana,” a hot spring inn in Yuzawa Town, Niigata Prefecture, as a demonstration project to prevent bears from entering the resort grounds. The inn is situated directly at the boundary between a mountainous bear habitat zone and an urban resort area

Challenge

Last year, a bear entered the parking lot and attacked a guest, causing serious injury. Located in a popular hot spring and ski resort that attracts heavy tourist traffic, the facility faces serious safety risks and reputational concerns. Because the property borders an urban zone, conventional deterrence methods using loud audible alarms and bright flashing lights are restricted to avoid disturbing guests and neighboring businesses.

Solution / Deployment

Four DeterCamAI units are deployed across key potential intrusion routes to create a full perimeter field of view:

Location 1 (Intrusion Gap): One unit mounted at 1.0–1.5 meters on soil where the previous bear intrusion occurred.

Location 2 (Employee Pathway): One unit secured to an on-site utility pole at 0.6–1.0 meters along the side wall.

Location 3 (Vehicle Access Point): One unit mounted on an unobtrusive pole next to the parking sign at approximately 0.5 meters.

Location 4 (Guest Entryway): One unit integrated into the landscape planting on the left side of the main entrance at 0.6–1.0 meters.

Urban Deterrence Configuration: Deterrence stimuli rely strictly on non-intrusive ultrasonic frequencies and vibration to comply with urban sound and lighting restrictions.

Objective

Yukinohana is a hot spring inn in Niigata Prefecture, located at the boundary between the mountains and the urban area. The area is a well-known hot spring and ski resort, attracting many tourists. Last year, a bear appeared in the parking lot, and a guest was attacked and seriously injured. Because of this incident, the inn is concerned about reputational damage and wants to take preventive measures

Currently, they only have surveillance cameras installed, but they have agreed to provide their site as a demonstration field to help prevent bears from entering the premises.

Although Yukinohana is situated just aside of mountain side, it is still located within an urban area, which imposes restrictions on the use of audible sound and light. For this reason, demonstration will focus on evaluating deterrent effects using ultrasonic and vibration

Yukinohana Overview

Location 1

Because there is a gap on the premises through which bear can enter the premises, we will install a DeterCamAI unit at this location to prevent intrusion.

Installation Height	Because there is a height difference at the site, we are assuming an installation height of approximately 1.0 to 1.5 meters.
Note	When a guest was attacked by a bear last year, the bear entered the premises from this location.

Location 2

There is an employee access pathway running along the building and the right-side wall, and bears could potentially use this route to enter the premises. Therefore, we will install a DeterCamAI unit at this location to prevent intrusion.

Installation	The DeterCamAI unit will be securely fastened to the utility pole located within the premises.
Installation Height	The utility pole will be used to achieve an installation height of approximately 0.6 to 1.0 meters.

Location 3

The right side of the hotel’s main entrance serves as a vehicle access point to the parking area. Because bears may enter the premises from this location, we will install a DeterCamAI unit at this location to prevent intrusion.

Installation	To keep the installation unobtrusive for guests, the unit will be mounted using a pole on the right side of the sign located at the vehicle access point.
Installation Height	Approximately 0.5 m is assumed

Location 4

The left side of the hotel’s main entrance serves as the entryway used by guests. Because bears may enter the premises from this location, we will install a DeterCamAI unit at this location to prevent intrusion.

Installation	Because the left side of this entrance consists of planted landscaping, the DeterCamAI unit will be mounted using a pole in a way that remains unobtrusive to guests.
Installation Height	0.6m – 1.0m
