Fukuoka City Case Study

DeterCam has been deployed at Katae Observatory in Fukuoka City, southern Japan, in collaboration with the city authorities, to detect and deter wild boar. The deployment forms part of efforts to address wild boar activity and protect agricultural land from crop damage.

Wild boars can create risks when they enter areas close to human activity and can also cause significant damage to agricultural crops. Fukuoka City is exploring the potential of new technologies to support both wildlife management and the reduction of crop damage caused by wild boars.

DeterCam cameras have been deployed at Katae observatory in Fukuoka City where wild boar activity has been observed or is considered likely to occur.
Additional DeterCam cameras have also been installed in Noko Island, where wild boars have caused crop damage. These cameras are being used specifically to evaluate whether automated detection and deterrence can help reduce wild boar intrusion and associated crop damage.

The project aims to evaluate DeterCam under two practical use cases, monitoring and deterring wild boars in areas close to human activity, and deterring wild boars from entering agricultural land to reduce crop damage.

The project is currently ongoing. Detection and deterrence events recorded by the deployed DeterCam cameras are being reviewed to evaluate wild boar activity and behavioral responses to the system. The additional deployment in Noko Island will provide an opportunity to evaluate DeterCam specifically in an agricultural environment where preventing wild boar intrusion and crop damage is the primary objective.

Monitoring will continue at the existing sites as well as at the Noko Island. Recorded events and field observations will be reviewed to assess wild boar detection and behavioral responses and to optimize camera locations and deployment configurations where necessary.

The results will be used to evaluate the practical applicability of DeterCam for both wild boar management and agricultural crop protection in Fukuoka City.
